Since 2019, one long table

A two-person studio that only works in October

We are Nell and Otis Pruitt. We make ten Halloween gift sets a year, sell them in one short season, and spend November sweeping up kraft paper dust.

The short version

A care package that got out of hand

The first Moonpick box was not a business. It was a shoebox wrapped in brown paper, sent to a friend who had moved 2,000 miles away and did not know a single person in her new city.

She called on Halloween to say she had put the candle on her windowsill and eaten the entire bag of caramels in one sitting. The next year, eleven people asked if they could buy one. We made forty in 2020 with a borrowed heat sealer, sold out in nine days, and have been trying to keep the whole thing small ever since.

What has not changed: we still write the note by hand, still draw the ghost ourselves, and still refuse to add a box to the line unless we would send it to someone we like.

How we choose what goes in

The rules we pack by

A gift box is a series of small decisions. These are the ones we have made the same way every year, mostly because we got them wrong first.

Nothing that only exists in October

A set should still be useful in February. That is why the candles are ordinary good candles, the notebook is a notebook, and the tin is a tin you will keep rice in long after the candy is gone. Seasonal packaging, year-round objects.

Candy from makers we could call on the phone

The caramels come from a confectioner in western North Carolina. The chocolate bats are made two hours away. If a supplier changes hands or changes recipes, we hear about it in a week rather than reading it on a label.

Scary is a setting, not a requirement

About a third of our customers are buying for kids under eight, and another third are buying for adults who would rather not be startled. Every box has a spooky and a mild version: the rubber spider comes in a separate paper packet you can leave out.

If it cannot ship safely, it does not go in

We tested jam jars, ceramic mugs, and one very unfortunate glass cloche. Anything that arrives broken more than occasionally gets cut, no matter how good it looks in a photograph.

Where the money goes

Small, deliberately

We are not chasing national retail. Ten designs and a short shipping window is what two people can pack without turning into a fulfillment center.

  1. Ten sets, one season

Designs lock in July. We build samples, give them to friends, and cut whatever nobody wants to keep.

  2. One long table, three people

Packing happens on Tuesdays and Thursdays in October. A seasonal packer joins us for the last three weeks.

  3. US addresses only

International food shipping rules are a maze we have no interest in running. Better to do one thing properly than four things badly.

Working with us

Corporate boxes, offices, and one very large family

We take small bulk orders — usually between twelve and eighty boxes — for offices, teachers' lounges, and family reunions that happen to fall on Halloween.

  • Same ten designs

Pick one set for everyone or mix three. We can print a company card inside each box.

  • Order by mid-September

Bulk orders need to be locked before the season starts so we can buy candy in the right quantities.

  • One invoice, one address

Ship to a single office or to a list of home addresses; either works.

Note on this demo: this page describes a fictional shop for a design sample. No bulk orders can be placed here, and no company details on this site are registered or verified.

Small questions

About the shop itself

Nell and Otis, plus Marisol, who has packed every October since 2021. There is no warehouse and no third-party fulfillment — if you email us, you are emailing the people who touched your box.
